How to get started with ChatGPT ads
ChatGPT Ads is currently one of the most significant developments in digital marketing, particularly as the platform begins its rollout across Europe. In Poland, ChatGPT Ads campaigns have been available since late August 2026.
At data.rocks, we have been utilizing the ChatGPT Ads Manager for some time, managing account configurations and campaigns for the U.S. market. The United States remains a primary focus for our team. We bring extensive experience in managing international expansions, backed by the technical infrastructure and strategic know-how required to effectively scale global operations.
This guide provides a comprehensive, step-by-step walkthrough of the ChatGPT Ads Manager and the technical configuration required to launch your first campaign.
Setting up an account in ChatGPT ads
Before launching your first campaign, you must establish an advertising account within the Ads Manager. The process is intuitive and follows an onboarding flow similar to other major ad-tech platforms.
Step 1: Create an account in Ads Manager
Access the platform at ads.openai.com. You may log in using an existing OpenAI account or select “Sign Up” to create a new one.
If you don’t have an account yet, select “Sign up” and complete the required information. Note that access to Ads Manager is currently restricted to selected markets.
If your business operates in a supported market, you can register directly within Ads Manager. For other regions, OpenAI lets you join the interest list to receive updates as the platform rolls out.
Step 2: Complete onboarding
When you first log in, Ads Manager will walk you through onboarding. Here, you’ll enter basic company and advertiser information.
Next up is account verification. We recommend completing this right away, as advertiser verification is required before running full ad campaigns.
Step 3: Fill in advertiser information
Once onboarding is complete, navigate to:
Settings → General → Account Information
Here you can enter your advertiser name, brand logo, and other details. Before proceeding, ensure your account status indicates successful verification.
Step 4: Configure billing
The next step is to create a billing profile. In Ads Manager, go to:
Billing → Overview → Set up billing profile
Fill in your billing details, including payment card info, billing address, and the email address for receiving invoices and payment documents.
Once billing is set up, your account is ready to fund ad campaigns.
Step 5: Add team members
If multiple people are working on your campaigns, there’s no need to share account logins. Ads Manager lets you invite team members and set customized access levels.
Go to:
Settings → Users → Invite
Next, enter the user’s email address and select their role. Available roles include Admin, Campaign Creation, and View-Only access. Only users with Administrative permissions can create conversions.
Once these steps are complete, your ad account is fully configured, and you can move on to the best part: creating conversions and ads.
Conversion configuration
Once logged in to Ads Manager, you can begin setting up conversions. You have access to a range of events corresponding to different stages of the user journey: from clicks and add-to-cart actions all the way to purchases.
To set up a conversion, go to:
Tools → Conversions → Create
First, create a data source that will transmit event information. Next, create a specific conversion by selecting the event you want to track from the list. Conversions can typically be configured via Google Tag Manager.
Creating a campaign
Once conversions are set up, you can move on to creating an ad campaign. To do this, navigate to the “Campaigns” tab and click “Create”.
At this stage, you can choose from the available campaign types, such as a standard text campaign or a campaign utilizing a product feed. Select the appropriate option from the menu during creation.
The account structure is organized similarly to other popular ad platforms, featuring three levels:
Campaign → Ad Group → Ad
This makes the setup process fairly intuitive for anyone who has previously worked with platforms like Google Ads. For detailed information on campaign creation, refer to OpenAI help articles.
Product feed
Connecting your product file is just as easy. Simply head to:
Tools → Feeds → Create feed
In the next steps, the system will prompt you to specify your product data source. Once added, the feed is created, and your products are ready to be used in product campaigns.
Although the platform supports three feed upload methods, using a feed URL is the most common approach. It automatically syncs data whenever your feed changes with no re-uploads needed.
Ad creation
When creating ads in ChatGPT Ads, there are a few key elements worth keeping in mind. However, the creation process itself is very intuitive—simply go to the “Campaigns” tab and select “Create”.
One of the main limitations is the character count for headlines and descriptions. ChatGPT Ads doesn’t support extensive copy like other ad platforms, so your messaging should be as concise and direct as possible:
- Headline – Can contain up to 50 characters maximum. However, to avoid truncation across certain placements, it is best to stay within 24 characters.
- Description – Can contain up to 100 characters maximum. To ensure the text displays in full, keeping it under 28 characters is recommended.
In practice, this means prioritizing tight copy right from the start and placing the most important information in the very first words.
Bidding model and budget
ChatGPT Ads offers several pricing models to align with your campaign goals. Currently, the available options are CPM, CPC, and oCPC (Optimized Cost Per Click)—a digital advertising bidding strategy where you pay per click (as with standard CPC), but the algorithm automatically adjusts your bid based on the likelihood that a user will convert (e.g., make a purchase or sign up).
Simply put, you pay for either impressions or clicks, but oCPC takes it a step further by optimizing ad delivery for users with high conversion intent.
Keep in mind that oCPC is billed per click, not per conversion. It uses conversion data to refine ad delivery toward the right audience.
Minimum campaign spend
The minimum budget depends on your ad account’s billing currency. For the most popular markets, it is:
Summary
ChatGPT Ads is a new solution that could significantly reshape ad campaigns in the coming years. Ads appear naturally within conversational contexts, reaching users right when they are researching and making decisions.
Ads Manager itself is intuitive, featuring a campaign structure and setup process familiar from other ad platforms.
